How to Successfully Shop Your Closet
As part of achieving budget friendly style, you must become an expert at shopping your own closet. The more you are able to effectively create new looks from pieces that you already own, the less you will have to spend on buying new pieces to transform your look.
Start With A Closet Edit
The first step in being able to effectively shop your own closet is to begin with a closet edit. Before you can be prepared to hit the sale racks at your local department store, you must first determine what it is that you need to purchase. Determining what you need comes only after you have made an honest assessment about what works in your current wardrobe. If you have not worn a piece in the most recent season, you do not need that piece as part of your collection. Look for items that are in pristine condition first. Those will remain in your wardrobe. Next, look for items that have small defects if those can be repaired then send them to the dry cleaners and keep them in your wardrobe. Finally, toss any items that are beyond repair and can no longer be worn.
Before you are truly able to shop your won closet, you be able to find what it is that you are looking for. There are several options available when it comes to organizing your personal style. Some people choose to organize their closets by color while others choose to organize their closets by where they plan to wear certain pieces. How you choose to organize your closet is up to you. The most important thing to remember is that you can see all the pieces in your closet and give them an opportunity to breathe in order to avoid damage.
Inventory Your Style
Once you have organized your style then the time comes to inventory what you have in your collection. This inventory will help you as you window shop in the days to come. If you have a clear picture of what you own, then you can effectively draw from the inspiration that you find in displays that you see. The app that I use is one called My Virtual Closet and it helps me by allowing me to carry my closet with me wherever I go. There is also a section that allows you to create outfits that are inspired by what you have in your closet, which means that you can instantly copy a window or store display.
Find Pieces That Serve Double Duty
If you are looking to revamp your wardrobe without a trip to your local department store, then you need to look for ways for items that you already own to serve double duty. Look at the blazers in your closet. Typically you will pair them with a trouser or a trouser jean. Try pairing those with a chic pair of shorts and a wedge for a dressier version. You can also add a contrasting belt over your blazer or a dress as a way to change a look that you have already worn. Finally, look for a way to stretch your dollar and your dress by adding a blazer or a sweater that you currently have in your closet.
Shopping your own closet is a skill that will help catapult your signature style on a budget. Now, its your turn to sound off how do you shop your own closet?
