How Do You Know if a Trend is Right For You?

Welcome to the third post in our series about tackling some of the biggest fashion challenges life has to offer. Our first two posts centered around how to remain stylish as a mom on the go and how to master the mall. This week we tackle how to identify if a trend is right for you. This is a touchy subject around my house because I have a set of thirteen year old twins who like to offer their opinion/advice on what I wear. In this case, unsolicited advice is not always the best advice ever given. For the most part that means that I let most of what they have to say go in one ear and out of the other.  Some of these conversations though beg the question of how do you know if a trend is right for you? The pin featured below is an example of a trend that I am completely in love with: color blocking… but again how do you know if this trend is right for you?

Is it In Season?

First of all not every trend is appropriate for every season. Determine if the trend is appropriate for the season that you are in. The color blocking trend that is featured above has been around for several years and with its many variations is actually appropriate for every season. However, trends like thick flannels are best served in the winter time versus warmer weather months.

Is it Flattering?

Even if a trend is the greatest thing since sliced bread and on every designer’s runway if it does not fit your body type, then the trend is not for you. One of the essential elements to remember with fashion is that fashion is a means to highlight your best features and if you do not base your selections on that requirement then you are doing a disservice to your fashion persona.

Is it Appropriate?

The question of whether or not a trend is appropriate is really a twofold concern. First you must consider whether or not the trend is appropriate for the event that you are going to. Not all trends are appropriate for the office and you must know where you draw the line. Next, is the trend appropriate for you age? This is a touchy one.  I have a pair of silver shorts that I bought last year that the kiddos wish I had not, but I love them and style them in a way that I feel is age appropriate. In the end it is up to you to decide the age appropriateness of your own wardrobe (within reason).

Are Comfortable in It?

The final consideration as always is your own comfort level. If you are comfortable in the trend, then more than likely the trend is one that you should be able to incorporate into your wardrobe in one way or another.

Now its your turn to sound off..what is your favorite trend this season?
